Travertine Shower with Hexagon Floor in Universal City
This shower remodel in a 1970s rancher home in Universal City near Pat Booker Road involved removing the original mud-set tile from the walls and floor. Mud-set installations from that era are often still structurally sound but the tile and grout are dated. After removal, the underlying mortar bed was evaluated and partially replaced where it had softened near the drain.
The walls were rebuilt with cement board and a Schluter Kerdi membrane. The wall tile is a 12x24 travertine-look porcelain set horizontally, which suits the lower ceiling height typical of 1970s construction. The floor uses a 2-inch hexagon mosaic sheet in a matching beige tone, which provides the grip needed on a shower floor without the visual busyness of smaller mosaic. A built-in niche was added to the back wall at a height that works for both standing and seated use.
